Giving Opportunities
Your giving makes a difference. Praise God! Through supporters like you the Touch Africa 05 team has met the expenses for the trip. The Touch Africa 05 team would like to invite you to consider investing in one of the ministries that we are partnering with here in Africa. Donations are tax-deductible. Touch Africa Real-time Offering Drive! We are holding a special giving campaign from Sunday, August 7 to Thursday August 11 (closing 12 midnight). All donations given during this time period will be wired to the Touch Africa 05 team in Africa, and they will be giving the offering to the various ministries before they leave Africa on August 16. You will see your giving in action, as we report with pictures and video. Donations received during this Real-Time Offering Drive will be equally divided among 4 ministries addressing orphans and the empowerment of the Church. (real-time offering drive closed 8/11 Thursday midnight PST) Ministries Spotlight (donations will be distributed equally among these 4 ministries) 1. The Yusheni Homes The Yusheni Homesand Multipurpose Centre was started by a woman named Evelyn who, moved with compassion and led by God, left the security of her job as a banker for the hardship and challenge of caring for the vast number of orphans roaming the streets. Unlike traditional orphanages, Yusheni Homes and Multipurpose Centre is an orphanage that works with the extended families of street orphans to provide care for the children when their extended families are unable to do so. Many of these children whose parents have died of HIV/AIDS take to the streets because their aunts, uncles, or grandparents are too poor to help them. Rather than having these orphans roam the streets and be left vulnerable to the behaviors of unscrupulous men, Yusheni Homes provides a place where these children can go during the daytime to have shelter, food, shower, clothing, and rest. Thus, the street orphans do not reside in Yusheni Homes but return to their extended families to sleep at night. Currently, the center provides for over 550 street orphans. The hope for Yusheni Homes is that street orphans would not only have the basic necessities to live but also be able to get education in the classrooms that are being built at the center right now. Please pray for those at the Yusheni center. Please pray that God would provide more workers as the center does not need money as much as they need workers to help run the center, mentor and educate these children. Chisomo Drop-off Center for Street Children The team went on a group visit to the Chisomo Drop-In Centre Monday morning. Chisomo (means “grace”) started years ago on the streets without an actual facility to call its own. The centre provides a place for Lusaka’s street children (homeless orphans) to escape the dangers of the streets like drug abuse, stds, and abuse during the day. It was founded by Rev. Aaron and his wife Josephine with the support and help of several others. It started with just 5 kids and has now grown to serve an average of 40 kids daily. The centre provides many different needs to the 7,000 orphaned street children within Lusaka, with an emphasis on tracing, reuniting and placing these children with relatives. They also provide daily meals, the opportunity to wash their clothes (ash covered after a night of sleeping on the street next to whatever they could burn to stay warm), counseling, education, and healthcare when ill. At the moment, Chisomo does not have the resources for a sleep-in center to allow the children to stay overnight but hope to one day be able to do so. Currently, the center is in danger of losing its facility. The owner of the property wants to sell the land and is asking Chisomo for $150,000USD to buy with very short notice, and just after the completion of the construction of 2 new classrooms on site. It is difficult for Aaron and Josephine to even think about that amount of money (that very day we visited, they were not sure how they were going to provide food for the kids there tomorrow, let alone have $150K to stay at the centre). Yet they believe He will provide a way. This ministry was started with nothing but faith and passion, and Aaron says that is how it will continue. Aaron and Josephine have asked us to pray for them, the centre, and the children who are a part of the program. We are asking our supporters to please do the same. This is an amazing ministry and an amazing couple. It was a privilege for us to be invited to partner with them. 3. The House of Moses the team had a chance to visit The House of Moses, an orphanage for infants. We fell in love with the babies at HOM as we were allowed to play with them for just a bit. House of Moses provides 24-hour nursing care for pre-mature and high-risk infants. Most of them have lost their mothers as a result of childbirth complications. Without House of Moses these infants would have little chance of surviving. House of Moses has gained international recognition and has been designated a “best practice model” in Africa. The House of Moses is a part of the Alliance for Children Everywhere. A Christian nonprofit child welfare organization founded in 1969. The Alliance works to develop and operate grassroots interventions that display the love of Jesus Christ by meeting the spiritual, social, and physical needs of outcast children. For more information, go to www.childreneverywhere.org. 4. Holistic Awakening Sub-sahara Africa (HASA) This is the main organization that Touch Africa is partnering with in Zambia. It is headed by a board of five local pastors and leaders. Their vision is to see the Church empowered to address poverty, HIV/AIDS, and to become a mission sending Church. The vision is beautiful and powerful. The Touch Africa team was privileged to partner with HASA for their first missions conference. We witnessed over 25 pastors come together to seek revival.
