About iMissions
iMissions 1605 E Elizabeth St Pasadena, CA 91104 o) 626-398-2341 email David Lee (director) at "davidklee at yahoo.com" (iMissions is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization and a collaborating agency with the U.S. Center for World Mission.) 1. iMissions: Mission and Vision Mission: To raise up and grow iMissionaries Vision: To create and grow grassroots involvement movements to reach the unreached peoples of the world until the Great Commission is finished. What is an iMissionary? An iMissionary is someone who exerts continual impact on the mission field without necessarily being there full-time. An iMissionary... 1. Has adopted the iMissions paradigm of activating and realizing a missionary calling in every individual. He/she has discovered an integrated missions calling that combines his/her profession, passions, and skills with his/her role in missions. The iMissionary realizes the "go" in the Great Commission is more about exerting influence and impact on the unreached and knows that he/she can do that without necessarily being on the mission field full-time. 2. Has committed to and is journeying in community with like-minded iMissionaries. The iMissionary is member of a local iMissionary community/prayer group that meets regularly. He/she Is taking next steps of obedience out of a rooted prayer life and is encouraged through fellowship and community. He/she has a changed lifestyle to reflect their integrated calling. 3. Is impacting the mission field through involvement in tangible projects. The iMissionary Is stepping into tangible involvement opportunities, starting from smaller steps of faith, leading to bigger ones. He/she Is finding fulfillment in actively using his/her skills and passions in innovative ways to serve and impact the mission field. He/she can impact field work by going to the field one or two times annually to directly use his/her skills abroad. 2. Why our mission is important The mission of iMissions to grow imissionaries enables the Church to release huge numbers of people and resources to reach the unreached peoples of the world. The mission field currently lacks people and resources. We believe that unless there is a mass activation of the Church, we will not see the fulfillment of the Great Commission in our lifetime. Many Christians who have a heart for missions feel disconnected and frustrated, because they are not able to tangibly impact the mission field without becoming a long-term missionary. iMissions bridges the gap between the mission-minded and the mission field. With iMissions we see the potential of many Christians finding fulfillment and exerting direct impact in reaching the unreached. Without an imissionary movement, many Christians will remain unactivated, dissatisfied and disconnected from the mission field. The following is our vision expressed in storytelling:* Introducing Servant Church in Botswana, Africa: Servant Church in Botswana, Africa has an active and vibrant missions program. They reach out to the poor, house orphans, and are preparing to send their first missionary to Sudan. They currently receive $25,000 in donations from the U.S. from various churches and individuals. However, their accounting system is very poorly setup and they have not found a way to show financial accountability to their U.S. supporters. Servant Church needs to show financial accountability to their U.S. sponsors, but they don't know how to set up an accounting system that meets U.S. standards. They are in risk of losing much of their financial support. This will greatly hamper their plans for missions. Introducing Beth in Los Angeles: Beth is 27 years old and is an accountant working in downtown Los Angeles. She caught a vision for missions while she was in college but felt God was not calling her to be a long-term overseas missionary. Beth is a very competent accountant but feels frustrated because she works 8 to 10 hours a day on work that is not related to missions. She feels like she is not making an impact on reaching the unreached peoples of the world. She is dissatisfied with her work and frustrated that she isn't doing more for missions. She doesn't know what to do. Introducing iMissions: iMissions staff met Beth at a Touch Africa community meeting that iMissions sponsors every 2nd Tuesday night of the month. Beth had heard about the meeting through her friend who went on a short-term missions trip with iMissions the past summer to Botswana. At the meeting Beth first heard about the iMissions paradigm of an "imissionary," someone who exerts continual impact on the mission field without necessarily being there full-time. Beth was doubtful at first but started asking how she could be involved in reaching and empowering the people of Botswana. An iMissions staff member shared about Servant Church and their need for a solid accounting system for their U.S. supporters. Beth's ears perked. She knew she wanted to do something. The launching of an imissionary: iMissions staff invited Beth to spend a week in Botswana to set up the accounting system of Servant Church. After a few weeks of wrestling, she decided to go. In Botswana she was able to meet the leadership of Servant Church and visit their various mission outreach programs. She was impressed and deeply moved. She set up an accounting system which would show financial accountability to Servant Church's U.S. sponsors. She also volunteered to spend 3 hours a week to coach and consult regarding accounting via email after her return to L.A. Beth used her accounting expertise and her understanding of U.S. financial systems to coach Servant Church on maintaining financial accountability specifically with U.S. sponsors. The members and leaders of Servant Church were delighted. This was an answer to their prayers. iMissions commissioned Beth as an iMissions-sponsored iMissionary and over the following years provided continual vision, community, training, networking and resources to help Beth be effective. Seeing fruit: Five years later Servant Church in Botswana is thriving. They are now receiving $200,000 in donations from U.S. churches and supporters. Thanks to the accounting system Beth set up and her continued financial coaching, Servant Church has managed to expand their outreaches to widows, the poor, and hundreds of orphans. They also sent 10 missionaries to various northern Africa countries and five missionaries to the Middle East. Beth is also finding greater fulfillment with her job and is a core member of a iMissions imissionary community group. She sees how God can use her skills to make a direct impact on the mission field. She sees what Servant Church has been able to do, due in large part to the work she contributed and is delighted. She wants to continue to grow in God's amazing global plan by playing her part as an imissionary. Over the past five years, Beth remained as an accountant but visited Botswana three times, spent 3 hours every week advising via email with Servant Church leaders. She also helped several other organizations in Asia and the Middle East. Throughout the past five years, as an iMissions-sponsored iMissionary, Beth participated in numerous iMissions member care, training, networking and support activities. She recently prayed, "God, thank You for providing a strategic way to impact the mission field. I never knew I could use my skills and do so much without necessarily having to be a full-time overseas missionary. Thank You for iMissions and the vision, support and opportunities You provided me through them." * story is fictional 3. Our Approach: Programs and Projects It's about investing in people. Take Beth (in story above), for example. She is a 27 year-old accountant and was dissatisfied with work because of her inability to directly impact the mission field. However, she was introduced to iMissions' new paradigm of missions, and through iMissions' investment and training, she has redefined her current job to play a significant role in impacting field work abroad. She is an iMissions-sponsored iMissionary and now finding greater fulfillment in her work and life. Cathy, for example, is a 30 year-old young professional, who is currently where Beth used to be. She has a heart for missions but is not called to be a long-term overseas missionary. She is frustrated and dissatisfied with her work because she doesn't see how it relates to missions. She wants to do more but doesn't know what to do. Without a ministry like iMissions, Cathy will likely remain dissatisfied and disconnected to tangible opportunities to directly impact the mission field with her skills, passions and giftings. Though these examples target young professionals, this paradigm of missions applies to any Christian (i.e. students, mothers, retirees) who feels dissatisfied and disconnected to the missions field because of a lack of tangible opportunities. Raising up the iMissionary: What does iMissions offer so that Cathy can transition to where Beth is currently? 1. iMissions helps Cathy catch the iMissions paradigm of "every individual a missionary." iMissions offers avenues through which Cathy can both grow in her heart for missions and her vision for herself to be a part of world evangelization as someone who is not a "full time" missionary. We utilize the websites and the Internet in order to both educate people about existing needs abroad as well as provide service opportunities. We also help coordinate and participate in conferences, which enable Cathy to hear the vision and meet iMissions staff one on one. Awareness and vision sharing events have been critical in casting vision and the spiritual and physical needs of strategic people groups. Finally, various internationally-coordinated quarterly events have also been key in sharing vision of the need of the unreached and the activation of iMissionaries. 2. iMissions helps Cathy to become a member of an iMissionary community of like-minded believers. iMissions sponsors communities of iMissionaries and potential iMissionaries that form in regional prayer groups meeting regularly to pray for a specific country/region. These prayer groups exist internationally but are concentrated mostly in the US. They are a place where likeminded people, like Cathy, who have a heart for missions but are not abroad, come together in order to pray, seek the Lord's will, and envision together the possibilities for involvement in missions. 3. iMissions trains Cathy and gives her opportunities to be involved in tangible projects having direct impact on the mission field. iMissions offers various training opportunities to people like Cathy. They include prayer training, country specific training, short term missions training, project development training, and internship opportunities through iMissions. iMissions also provides people like Cathy with tangible and tailored involvement opportunities. Cathy is able to grow in her interest and involvement through direct participation. These opportunites include: joining or leading a prayer group, short term trips, song writing opportunities, using the arts for missions, coordinating events, internships, and fundraising projects. Growing the iMissionary: Beth is an iMissions-sponsored iMissionary, and 1) has caught the iMissions paradigm of "every individual a missionary," 2) is a member of an iMissionary community, and 3) is involved in tangible projects making a direct impact on the mission field. iMissions provides member-care support to encourage people like Beth to continue in their journey of exciting obedience. 1. iMissions gives Beth continual opportunities to grow in vision and inspiration. iMissions helps Beth grow in her understanding of the iMissionary mission paradigm through resources, correspondence and vision casting. iMissions shares with Beth what God is doing through her and other iMissionaries. iMissions provides updates from the field. iMissions casts vision and roadmaps for grassroots involvement movements for specific nations and peoples. 2. iMissions helps Beth grow and journey with others as a member of an iMissionary community. iMissions provides community and accountability through community/prayer groups, online interactive community, various networks and through her home church's sponsorship of iMissions. iMissions provides concentrated support for leaders of iMissions-sponsored community/prayer groups. We also plan to hold yearly retreats for all iMissionaries to come together for fellowship, renewal and accountability. 3. iMissions give Beth training, networking, mentoring and resourcing opportunities so Beth can be effective in the tangible projects she is involved to make a direct impact on the missions field. iMissions provides continual training throughout the year: prayer training, project training, short term missions training, country specific training, internship training, and more. We engage and resource iMissionaries through our organizational, professional, student, project, church, field and mentoring networks. These networks work to resource iMissionaries for the specific project that he/she is involved with. iMissions provides continued tangible and tailored opportunities for people like Beth to grow in their World Christian journey. The vision of iMissions is to empower thousands of people like Cathy to get to a place where Beth is, and to support growth for the thousands of people like Beth that iMissions will have helped. We believe that this new generation of iMissionaries are the key catalyzers of grassroots involvement movements that reach the unreached peoples of the world until the Great Commission is finished. |
